Making Sense of the World

The following links are offered, in an effort to help you too make sense of this world we live in:

Telephony

  • Being one who has used the telephone at the office, a fair bit, I became frustrated that although I could look in the telephone book at the map, or associated listing, pick out a place, and determine the area code – there was no easy index going the other way; converting a telephone number [from a missed-call memo] to a location. This became especially troublesome when wondering if the location to be called was to the East (and thus probably no one would be in the office if a call were made late in the day), or to the West (and not to be called first thing in the morning). This index is an effort to resolve that.
    • One listing, sorted by Country-Code, gives the corresponding country, and the associated offset from UTC to ‘local’ time.
    • Since the North-American Country-Code spans several time lunes, there is another listing with corresponding breakdown by area-code.
    • Additional listings, for other wide countries, are pending.

Trouble-Shooting Guide

  • As a mechanical engineer, I get to trouble-shoot many things; some built by others, some being built by my colleagues and myself. Partly in frustration with the apparent ineptness of others, partly to analyse some of my successes, I wrote a Guide to Troubleshooting.

2’s Compliment Notation

  • After struggling with 2’s Compliment notation for many years, all of a sudden I understood it. Here is what I realized.

Binary Gray-Code

  • An brief primer on the Gray-Code number system.

Economics and Taxation

  • Economics may never be understood, but here is another look at Economics and Taxation. Even if it does not answer any question, it hopefully exposes some deep questions.

Evolution

  • Evolution is not just a theory; but a scientific theory – and therein lies a significant distinction.

Universal Calendar

  • Using the spread-sheet calculator of OpenOffice.Org, I have prepared a ‘universal’ calendar. Enter the offset from the current year, or enter the year in question, and the dates will be shown.

Conversions

  • Some interesting conversions, and the application of units, including:
    • Vehicle fuel economy, as an area.
    • People, as tons.
    • Debt vs Income.

Mothers-in-Law

  • Why do Mothers-in-law have a reputation? Is it deserved? Here is my look at the situation.
